The Original Swiss Connector System

The E-2000® connector system was developed by DIAMOND SA in Losone, Switzerland, and has become one of the most widely specified fibre optic interfaces in European carrier, utility, rail and data-centre networks. This page summarises what distinguishes the original system, which connector and enclosure variants are available, and what to check when a tender specifies “E-2000” or the LSH interface.

The challenge

Original or compatible: three points that make the difference

LSH-compatible connectors fit mechanically. What they do not bring with them is the documented manufacturing chain behind them.

Specified, not chosen

In many networks E-2000 is written into the tender. Then the question is not whether, but from where.

The protective shutter is part of the specification

The spring-loaded laser protection shutter closes automatically when the connector is withdrawn — protecting the end face and the eye at the same time.

One connector interface across all form factors

The same system in box, module and wall distribution box: consistent handling, one spare-parts profile.

The solution

The Original from Losone, Switzerland

DIAMOND SA was founded in Losone (Ticino, Switzerland) in 1958 and has been active in fibre optics since 1979. The E-2000® connector is DIAMOND’s best-known development: a push-pull connector with an integrated, spring-loaded protective shutter that closes automatically when the connector is unplugged. Development and manufacturing of the connector components remain in Losone. E-2000® is a registered trademark of DIAMOND SA.

What Defines the E-2000® Connector

  • 2.5 mm zirconia ferrule — the ceramic ferrule guides the fibre with the precision required for low-loss singlemode connections
  • Spring-loaded laser protection shutter — closes automatically on unplugging, protecting technicians from laser emission and the end-face from dust and contact damage
  • Insertion loss typically ≤ 0.1 dB per mated pair
  • 500–1000 mating cycles — designed for installations that are patched and re-measured over their lifetime
  • Standardised interface — the mechanical interface is defined in IEC 61754-15 (LSH)
  • Push-pull latching — the connector locks positively in the coupling and releases only via the latch, not by cable pull
The evidence

The original from Losone

The E-2000® connector comes from DIAMOND SA in Losone, Switzerland. We are an authorised distribution partner — the supply chain is unbroken, and the test reports come from that same production.

Versions

Connector and Coupling Programme

The E-2000® programme covers the connector geometries commonly required in access, backbone and in-building networks:

  • Singlemode APC (green, 8° angled end-face) — the standard choice for FTTH and carrier networks where return loss matters
  • Singlemode PC (blue) — for existing infrastructure that was specified with straight polish
  • Multimode versions — for in-building and campus networks
  • Simplex and duplex connectors, matching couplings and pigtails for splice-based distribution

Colour-coded housings and mechanical keying help prevent mismatched APC/PC connections in the field.

Enclosure Technology for the E-2000® System

DIAMOND’s 19″ and wall-mount enclosure programme is built around the E-2000® connector and is supplied in the DACH region through Fiber Products:

Product family Format Characteristics
Future Box 1U / 2U, sliding Lockable, extendable splice boxes for installations with regular service access
Fusion Box 1U, fixed Rigid splice boxes for fixed installations, nine variants
4U Carrier System 19″ chassis, 4U Modular chassis for pull-out 7TE compact modules, up to 144 fibres
Compact Modules 7TE Slide-in modules Pull-out inserts for the 4U carrier system, staged expansion
Wall Distribution Modules Wall / DIN rail Compact distribution up to 24 fibres for cabinets and decentralised locations

An overview of all families is available on the DIAMOND splice boxes & splice modules page.

Why Fiber Products

Four reasons to source E-2000® from us

Authorised distribution partner of DIAMOND SA

Swiss precision from a single source — E-2000® with typ. ≤ 0.1 dB insertion loss and a spring-loaded laser protection shutter.

Connectors, adapters and housing technology from a single source

From the connector through the adapter to the housing, the same source — no tolerance mismatches between parts from different manufacturers.

Data sheet and part number for every version

Every available version is documented. The enquiry goes out with the part number, not with a description.

One connector system across the entire line

The same E-2000® connection level in every form factor: consistent handling, one spare-parts profile, no system breaks in the installed base.

Planning tools

Calculate and configure first, then enquire

Three tools with real part numbers — check the optical budget and put your configuration together live in 3D.

In detail

Where the E-2000® System Is Specified

The combination of protective shutter, low insertion loss and positive latching has made the E-2000® interface a frequent requirement in networks where connections are patched, measured and documented over long service lives:

  • Carrier and FTTH networks — central offices, PoPs and distribution frames with high port counts
  • Municipal utilities — city networks in which splice boxes are extended in stages over years
  • Industrial and energy infrastructure — environments where the closed shutter protects end-faces between service visits
  • Data centres and campus networks — backbones where return loss and repeatable measurements matter

In these segments the connector is usually specified together with the matching enclosure technology — which is why DIAMOND’s splice boxes, chassis and wall modules are designed around the E-2000® coupling grid from the outset.

System family

Original vs. LSH-Compatible Connectors

The same system technology, a different form factor and different fields of application.

The mechanical interface of the E-2000® connector is standardised as LSH in IEC 61754-15. Because the interface itself is an open standard, several manufacturers offer LSH-compatible connectors. “E-2000”, by contrast, is a registered trademark of DIAMOND SA and designates the original product from Losone.

For tenders and procurement this has a practical consequence: a specification that only references “LSH” or “IEC 61754-15” permits any standard-compliant connector. If the original is required, the manufacturer and product designation must be named explicitly.

Independent of the manufacturer, these points are worth checking in any specification:

  • Interface — compliance with IEC 61754-15 stated explicitly
  • Manufacturer designation — original E-2000® (DIAMOND SA) or LSH-compatible product, named as such
  • Ferrule specification — material and geometry data provided
  • Optical performance — insertion and return loss with measurement documentation, not just data-sheet values
  • Mating-cycle rating — stated and appropriate for the planned service life
